i am just trying to figure out the very baby first steps with the coding. it keeps telling me i have to “declare the actor in the header before I can play the story.” I have no idea what that means and have spent the last 2 hours looking at examples, forums, etc. trying to figure it out. Can anyone explain it?

Did you find the Tutorials? Notion – The all-in-one workspace for your notes, tasks, wikis, and databases.
However, for me, that sounds like you either haven’t created the actor yet, or misspelled them in the asset list
if you use the code editor, you find the asset list on the right side. There you can click on “add new” and create a character.
The Unique ID is how you call them in your script, and are written in Capital letters without spaces: MC_CHAR for example. The story name is the name that will be shown on the speechbubble those can have spaces: My Name
and nearly the same for visual editor
