When middle-schooler Derek Choate discovers a haze emerging from the forest outside his small hometown, he’s more curious than concerned. But soon the haze spreads, eventually covering the entire Earth and causing all surface water to evaporate. Derek and his family struggle to survive as civil society starts to break down around them.
As Derek’s parents become more desperate, they put their faith and fates in the hands of a mysterious man leading a cult-like group. But Derek doesn’t trust the man’s help is as pure of heart as it appears, so he runs away. With only his keen sense of direction and his clever pet cat to aid him, Derek tries to overcome the hazards—both natural and man-made—awaiting in the haze.
